ESPN’s analytics predicting Indiana to win over Michigan

The Indiana Hoosiers are having a remarkable season so far, currently sitting at the top of the Big Ten with a 5-0 (2-0 in conference) record. Depending on what happens in Nebraska in a few weeks, Indiana could easily go for a record-breaking 10-2 season.

But what if they went 11-1?

The idea of an Indiana upset over Michigan had been discussed before. HBS staff had discussed it in a voice chat Sunday night, however, it was quickly dismissed as an outside chance at best. That is, until an Instagram post by the Sickos Committee changed everything.

Your eyes aren’t fooling you. ESPN has predicted that Indiana, the worst college football team ever by all-time losses (713; 1st in FBS), has a 68.1 percent chance to beat Michigan. And that’s not all. Not only are the Hoosiers the worst team ever, but according to Winsipedia, they are also 10-62 all-time against Michigan.

This, of course, seems totally outlandish. However, I’d like to present two reasons as to why this prediction is being made.

1. Indiana is at home.

Beating Michigan at the Big House is nigh impossible for a team like Indiana. However, with the game taking place in front of a Memorial Stadium crowd almost guaranteed to be more electric than ever, Michigan football is going to be facing a beast that has only been seen on the hardwood.

2. Michigan’s QB situation.

As of this article’s writing, things are still quite uncertain in the Ann Arbor QB room. Highly touted quarterback recruit Davis Warren started in Michigan’s first three games, but was benched against USC due to turnover issues. And while yes, Orji is a serviceable athlete, he isn’t really playoff material. Which leaves Michigan between a rock and a hard place, as the Big Ten’s most ‘vague and ill-defined’ mascot looms large on the horizon.

So, with those things in mind, things are looking quite grim for the Wolverines. Though some of the Michigan faithful may not be convinced. I understand that. Rooting for the underdog is always fun. However, in this case, I’m rooting for the eternal underdogs, and to convince you to join me, I have taken a page from the Hoosier playbook, and employed a bar graph (designed by our graphics team).

Behold. Data.

I think that’s all I need to say.

Indiana plays Michigan on November 9th. Time and channel yet to be determined. Regardless of who wins, it ought to be one of the greatest games of 2024.
