Pacific keeps the dream alive, looking forward to Gateway with hope after a 42-20 upset over Sullivan

SULLIVAN, Missouri – In a beautiful upset that I was unable to fully witness, the Pacific Indians stormed Sullivan’s field with guns blazing, upsetting the #2 seed 42-20.

Freshman Gavin Haddox would begin the game with a 91-yard kick return TD on the opening kickoff. Sullivan’s senior QB Robert York II would rush for a TD in response, however, they would fail the extra point attempt, leaving them in the dust. Junior QB Seth Stack would then rush for two more touchdowns in the 1st half, growing the lead to 21-6.

What followed was a bizarre halftime show that made me question why our marching band doesn’t do anything outside of regular-season home football games. I’ve seen the 8th grade band, and they are phenomenal. That new talent, combined with our excellent theater department, we could do as well, if not better than the Screaming Eagles and their shiny, “symbolic” nonsense.

After all, the only thing “diamond in the rough” about Sully is their coal-colored facepaint.

You can’t really get that many good pictures when you’re forced to leave in the middle of the 3rd. Fun fact: half of my pictures are taken during the 4th! [credit: Quinn Jones]

Going back to football, York would score another rushing TD for Sullivan, go for two, and then fail. Meanwhile, Pacific chugged along like the trains running through their downtown, as Stack completed a third rushing touchdown and a 6 yard TD pass to junior receiver Parker Thomas, extending the lead to 35-12 at the end of the third.

After his two previous rushing TDs, York would throw the ball to junior juggernaut Mark Jennings, and finally learn how to score an extra point, as they cut down the lead to 35-20 with one last touchdown.

Unfortunately, that would only serve as their swansong, as junior running back Colton Kossuth would run for one last touchdown, returning these coals to their rocky grave until next fall, with a final score of 42-20.

Seriously, my pickings are really slim.

Senior Trey Kulick excelled on defense for Pacific, with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery. Senior kicker and reciever Kade Collins was also successful, making every extra point attempt.

This marks the end for Sullivan, who will next play football on August 29th, 2025, facing the Northwest Lions in Cedar Hill. Pacific, on the other hand, faces an increasingly questionable, yet still undefeated Gateway STEM team Friday night for the district championship.

Despite our victory, though, Sully Week coverage continues, with one last article about their concession stand. Week 11 coverage then finishes with an article covering Union’s chilling season finale against Gateway, which may serve as a beacon of hope for an underdog Pacific team.
