ST. LOUIS, Missouri – The dream is over.
Pacific went in with the utmost confidence. Charts, stats, film, everything seemed to point towards a win. Everything except the eye test. And as it turns out, that’s all that Gateway needed to prove that they weren’t frauds.
Starting off hot with a touchdown on the first drive from Maqel Campbell, the Jaguars would leave Pacific in the dust, not trailing for the entire game as they defeated the Indians 28-14.
Shawn Robinson would extend the lead to 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter, before Pacific junior QB Seth Stack found 1st team all-conference senior WR Kade Collins for a touchdown. They hoped to keep it within a score at the half, but with 50 seconds left before halftime, Stack threw an interception to Anthony Rayner, who’d bring it to the house to lead 21-7 going into the 3rd quarter.
The two teams kept it in gridlock during the 3rd quarter, but Seth Stack would find junior WR Parker Thomas in the 4th for the final score of the season, taking the lead down to 21-14. Kade Collins attempted the onside kick, but Gateway recovered it, and sealed the game with a final touchdown.
This ends Pacific’s season with a 6-6 record, and 2nd-place district finish. Junior RB Colton Kossuth, projected to run for 85 yards this week, only ran 41, being unable to pass 1,000 rushing yards this season, finishing with a total of 979.
Gateway plays Festus on Friday.
HBS will publish one more article this week, featuring our pick for Pacific football player of the year. After that, HBS will go on hiatus until December, when we begin our coverage of Pacific basketball, Apex Legends, and potentially other sports. Stay tuned.
