Editorial: Pacific basketball is, for lack of a better term, screwed.

WASHINGTON, Missouri – Immigrants: they get the job done.

The Indians finished last at the Turkey Tournament last week, with normal losses to rivals Union and Washington in the consolation bracket, and a humiliating 83 to 27 blowout in the season opener to Principia. There is nothing I can really say unbiasedly here, so we’re going op-ed mode for this one.

Pacific basketball was already projected to do badly this year, with the team, which went 9-18 last year, losing strong seniors such as Xavian Cox and Trey Bibb. Unlike the football team, who was able to fix the graduation problem with newcomer Gavin Haddox, basketball was forced to backfill with an even worse JV team, only adding one freshman. To show you how dire the situation is here, let’s look at the Principia game.

In our defense, Principia was stacked. The Panthers, being a rich Catholic school, were armed with nuclear weapons like Sekou Cisse, a 6’9″ 210 lb. sophomore from Nicaragua. Yes, the country. We were dealing with recruiting violations on a global scale.

Despite this, our problems still showed. Parker Thomas was still hurt from football, our seniors under-performed, and our scoring leader was Spencer Bukowsky, a freshman who scored 7 points. Of course, I wasn’t there to actually see it, but I talked to many spectators and players after the fact.

After that mess, we’d lose to both of our rivals. Another stunning, though not quite as grave, failure.

I don’t have enough energy, time, or information to write anything more. Pacific plays their fourth and final game at Borgia, against Borgia, tomorrow at 7. I will actually be there that time. Expect a real article on Wednesday.
