“Wait a second… Quinn? Writing about something other than sports? Am I seeing this right?” I know. It’s crazy. The idea of me expanding my horizons? Preposterous! But bear with me.
As the son of two theater kids, one would expect me to also be singing my heart out 24/7.
Wrong. I hate singing (out loud, anyway). Even if I wanted to, I have a terrible cough at the moment. Not only that, but I am also sick to death of musicals. I have heard Hamilton nonstop for the last month, and every time I hear the name of that godawful Secretary of the Treasury, I can feel my patriotism slipping away bit by bit. God Save the King.
So imagine my shock when I absolutely loved Wicked when my dad took the family to see it. A movie that I came into with the expectation of falling asleep halfway through. It was probably the best movie that I’ve seen this year. Granted, the only other movie I saw in theaters was Inside Out 2, but that was also amazing.
Ariana Grande was absolutely insufferable as Glinda. She nailed the mean girl stereotype so perfectly that it was hard to watch sometimes. Amazing. Obviously, she also killed it with the songs, as expected from one of the most famous musicians in the world.
Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba was also enjoyable. She really did defy gravity. I also liked the goat teacher. Forgot his name.
With all of that in mind, I rate Wicked an 8/10. Can’t wait for part 2.
Apologies for the short, non-detailed article. Was too busy watching the movie to take notes. This was kind of an impromptu, “I need to make up for over a week with no articles,” kind of piece anyway. I plan on reviewing the spring play at Pacific later on, so you’ll probably end up seeing a more detailed review there.
